School Curriculum

At Vernon Lodge we offer a fully balanced curriculum allowing pupils to achieve their maximum potential. In other words, we aim to develop the whole child, ensuring all his or her learning needs are met. Our small classes facilitate individual attention, and teachers are able to prepare work to suit pupils’ individual needs, as strengths and weaknesses are easily identified. Full written reports are issued to parents twice a year.
Foundation Stage: 3 to 5 years (Kindergarten, Lower Prep / Reception)

We offer a broad based, very child-centred curriculum which encompasses Personal and Social Development, Play, Communication, Language and Literacy, Numeracy, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical Development, Creative Development and Topic work. Many pupils are reading well by the age of 4.

Key Stages 1 and 2: 5 to 11 years (Year 1 to Year 6)

The school has a strong tradition of high standards of Literacy and Numeracy. Pupils are encouraged to develop mental skills using a variety of strategies, and self-confidence in speech and composition. We cover the national curriculum and aim to go beyond it. Specialist teachers are introduced in some subjects from Year 1. Other subjects taught are IT, science, history, geography, religious education, music, PE, art, design and technology, PHSE (personal, social and health education).French is taught from Reception and the standard of spoken French is very good. Trips to France are arranged for Years 3 to 6 and are very popular. Homework must be done by all pupils, and a homework diary is signed by parents on a daily basis. A house system of merits is used as an incentive for pupils in all aspects of school life – success is encouraged, celebrated and rewarded! Pupils may join Prep, an after school facility for homework. The school has an excellent record of results in senior school entrance and scholarship examinations. These results confirm that the type of education on offer at Vernon Lodge really does work. Indeed some pupils achieve academic success which they may have thought beyond their reach.
